EXPO // CASUAL HOBOS (15-16.09.17)

September 15-16, 2017
GAST // Oude Beurs Hofstraat 15 // 2000 Antwerpen

During the Great Depression in the 1930s, American workers moved from city to city in search of work by secretly hitchhiking on freight trains. This created a subculture of nomads who travelled through the country with the hope of a better life. Following the footsteps of these so-called hobo’s, four Antwerp eccentrics travelled through Western Europe with little more than a few cans ravioli and bottles of drinkable water to restore this tradition.

The exhibition CASUAL HOBOS creates an atmospheric image of drives along the detached paths of the current transforming climate. You can expect photos of modern hobo’s waiting for the next train, doing absolutely nothing; video footage of boredom, on top of an empty wagon of a cargo train; snapshots of tins of ravioli on a wood fire; paintings of individuals indulging in the unpredictability of the weather and the changeability of the train network; silkscreens and illustrations of a journey to nowhere …

On Friday, September 15, the doors will be open for the very last time in the Oude Beurs at GAST(e). Roda Lits has the moves, Captain Crack plays the records. On Saturday, September 16, El Neoray is making customized handpoke tattoos, inspired by the hobo trip. You’re welcome: there will be ravioli.

Vernissage on Friday, September 15, from 7pm till 11pm.

Open on Saturday, September 16, from 1pm till 6pm.
